Chilling Out

Relaxing is just as important as working out. In fact, sometimes the only way I can get through my workout at all is the thought of the sauna, jacuzzi and long hot shower with my yummy coconut oil body wash that comes afterwards!

In actual fact, it is pretty important to give your body a rest from time to time. No-one should be hitting the gym hard, every day, no matter how fit you want to get. You’ll only end up increasing your chances of injuries or strains – and if that happens then you’ll have to take a much longer break from the gym than a couple of days. My general rule of thumb is to have a hard gym session every other day. That doesn’t mean that you have to have a complete day off exercise every other; you could go to a yoga class or swim, something which puts less pressure and strain on your body. Of course, you should take a complete day off now and then. You could give yourself a treat on your non-gym days. I like to go and get a massage or make an appointment for my haircut, something that will make me feel really good about myself. Just trying to replicate that high I get from the gym!

Trying to keep up my fitness when I’m away is a bit more tricky. Getting motivated when the beach is calling is never easy, is it? I swim lengths and lengths when I’m away anyway, but I also try and go for a jog now and then. The last thing you want to so is let exercise take over your holiday though. It’s supposed to be about relaxation after all, not becoming obsessed with your usual exercise routine!

Take a Picture

Buying a painting or photograph to hang on the wall of your home gym is a big decision. After all, what you hang on your wall can totally complete the look of a room. You have to take into consideration colour schemes and style choices. Let’s be honest, an arty black and white photo would not fit into a traditional home with wooden beams! If you can’t find anything that fits with your style, you can always get creative yourself. What’s to stop you taking pictures of your local town or favourite countryside spot and have it framed? You could even get really creative and paint something. After all abstract art can be absolutely anything and you have complete control over the colours involved! You could even convince friends and visitors that you’ve shelled out on some exclusive piece by a hot up and coming artist. In fact, a close friend of mine recently gave up his job as at a car import company in order to spend more time on his painting. It turns out to have been a great career move for him as he has so many commissions, his artwork really has proved very popular in the local community.

If you want to try something different and not just hang any old painting or photograph on your wall, then you can always go for a fabric wall hanging. These come in all shapes, sizes, colours and patterns, though they are a bit harder to make yourself. Any piece of fabric came become a wall hanging, even if its original purpose was something completely different. As a student I shared a flat with a guy who cut interesting shapes out of a 1970s paisley duvet cover and framed them. Maybe a bit too hippy for the modern home, complete with housewives who believe in hair removal, but you get the idea. A lot of wall hangings do have an ethnic feel to them, with Oriental or Asian designs and motifs. Again, these maybe won’t fit into a more traditional home but can look stunning in plain, minimalist modern apartments.
